Results from the first studies of the Health and Environmental issues of amines used in CO2 capture

Since 2007 there has been high focus in Norway on the health and environmental challenges connected to the use of amines for CO2 capture. Of particular concern have been the compounds nitrosamines and nitramines which might be formed in the process or in the atmosphere when amines are used or emitted. A lot of work has since then been started to try to find solutions to these challenges.
The CO2 Cature Mongstad (CCM) project is publishing results from the first studies of the Health and Environmental issues of amines used in CO2 capture plant.
CLIMIT has funded several studies to reveal health and environmental properties of some general amines. CO2 Technology Centre Mongstad (TCM) also needed answers to some of these questions to be able to get their emission permit for amines to be used in their test facilities. The CCM project have had a different approach since it has been necessary to prepare for the qualification of different technologies which could be selected for the full scale capture plant at Mongstad. A broad mapping of generic amines has thus been necessary. The first round of studies were literature surveys and selection of methods and tools to be used for characterizing amines and their corresponding nitrosamines and nitramines.
These studies have been fully funded by the Norwegian state. It has thus been the intention to make the results of these studies publicly available. The first round of reports prepared by commissioned institutes and companies is listed below split into the main areas of investigation:
